Lewis Padgett’ın ses getiren kısa bilimkurgu öyküsünden uyarlanan "Sihirli Kutu", içinde ilk bakışta oyuncağa benzeyen garip nesneler olan bir kutu bulan iki küçük çocuğun hikayesini anlatıyor. Çocuklar bu “oyuncaklarla” oynadıkça, giderek artan zeka belirtileri göstermeye başlarlar. Öğretmenleri, bu iki kardeşin anne ve babasına, çocuklarının “dahi” seviyesini bile aşan zihinsel bir aktivite gösterdiğini söylediğinde, çocukların ailesi de ortada garip bir şeyler olduğunun farkına varır. İki kardeşten küçüğü olan Emma, annesine oyuncaklar arasında adının Mimzy olduğunu söylediği bir tavşanın ona “yeni şeyler öğrettiğini” söyler.

Emma’nın annesi, çocuklarının durumuyla ilgili giderek artan bir endişeye kapılmışken, tüm şehri etkileyen bir elektirik kesintisi yaşanır. Hükümet yetkilileri kesintinin kaynağını araştırdığında, ailenin evi ile karşılaşırlar. Çok geçmeden, işler içinden çıkılmaz bir hal alır.

Benjamin Disraeli

Benjamin Disraeli, the British statesman who became Prime Minister of England, had no formal education in a public school or a university.

His brilliance of wit and repartee was outstanding.

He was born in a Jewish family on December 21, 1804, in London. Though baptised as a Christian at the age of 13, Disraeli was proud of his Jewish roots.

When his enemies called him a Jewish scamp, he replied: “Half Christendom worships a Jewess, the other half a Jew. Which should be the superior race, the worshipped or the worshippers?”

Disraeli first gained fame in 1826 with the publication of his novel, Vivian Grey. He became a member of parliament in 1837.

As a Conservative Party member, he was Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1852, 1858-59 and 1867. He was Prime Minister for a brief period in 1868 and again from 1874 to 1880.

During his second premiership, he got enacted social legislation for slum clearance, public health and merchant seamen’s conditions of service.

In 1876, Disraeli, a favourite of Queen Victoria, bestowed the title of Empress of India on the queen.

In 1878, he averted a war through negotiations, when Russia threatened to attack Constantinople.

Disraeli and the Tories fell from power in 1880, but by the time, Disraeli had established Britain’s position as the world’s leading Imperial Power.

Disraeli died on April 19, 1881.

Teresa Brewer, 76, 1950s Pop Songstress

Teresa Brewer, who died yesterday at 76 at her home in New Rochelle, was a sprightly songstress best known for her 1950 hit "Music! Music! Music!" with its catchy intro, "Put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon."

The bouncy song, originally a B-side throwaway track, became her biggest hit and signature tune.

Standing 5-foot-2, brunette, and with a perky nose, Brewer was telegenic and her songs played up her all-American image. She had such novelty hits as "Choo'n Gum" (1950) and "The Hula Hoop Song" (1958), but the vocal talent was for real. Time magazine described her as "leather-lunged" and added that her voice was "somewhere between a blowtorch and a cello." Comparing her to a brash nightclub entertainer of the era, Bing Crosby called her the"Sophie Tucker of the Girl Scouts."

Brewer's greatest popularity came in the mid-1950s, when she scored hits such as "You'll Never Get Away," "Ricochet Romance," and the million-selling "Till I Waltz With You Again," while performing at some of the spiffiest rooms in the country, including the Versailles and the Latin Quarter in New York, the Sahara in Las Vegas, and the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles. Her last charted hit, a cover of Edith Piaf's "Milord," came in 1961.

In the 1960s, Brewer mostly stopped touring to concentrate on raising her four daughters, but she also began making jazz records, including "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing," Duke Ellington's last recording. She also recorded with Count Basie, Benny Carter, Stephane Grappelli, and Earl Hines.

Later she verged into rock and country; her yodel was said to be exemplary. In 1991 she recorded a tribute to Louis Armstrong, "Memories of Louis."

Born Teresa Veronica Breuer on May 7, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of a glass inspector at the Libby-Owens Co. She made her first appearance on radio at age 2, in an audition for a local radio station at which she sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." By age 5, she was a regular on the "Major Bowes Amateur Hour" radio program, and she later toured with some of the "Major Bowes" live performing units. She also starred in an early Toledo television program, "Toledo's Miss Talent."

At 16, Brewer dropped out of high school, won a talent contest, and moved to New York. There she quickly found an agent and a recording contract, and a new spelling for her last name — the W supposedly looked better on a marquee. "Music Music Music" was her splashy introduction to a nation addicted to the hit parade, although the original release was the A-side, "Copenhagen." She was just 18.

Brewer became a stalwart of Ed Sullivan's "Toast of the Town." Sullivan would introduce her as "the little girl with the big voice," and she became a serious contender in various national popularity polls.

In 1953, she appeared in a 3–D film, "Those Redheads From Seattle," in which her performance inspired Paramount to offer her a seven-year contract. "I already had two kids and was expecting my third, so I thought that was ridiculous," she told her official fan Web site. "I said, 'No, thank you.'" In 1958, she described her technique for keeping her voice in shape, despite a restricted touring schedule. "No trouble at all," she told the Los Angeles Times. "I keep in training by screaming at the children."

Brewer was divorced from her first husband, Bill Monahan, in 1972 and was remarried to Bob Thiele, a recording engineer who had recorded such jazz pioneers as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Anita O'Day for his own Signature and Flying Dutchman labels from the 1940s. With Thiele as producer and creative partner, her repertoire became deeper and more adventuresome. He died in 1996.

Brewer is survived by her daughters, four grandsons, and five great-grandchildren.

Karl Urban Signed as Star Trek's Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy!

This month sure has become one delightful period to remember by the Trekkies, none other because it marks the casting made on principal characters for the highly-anticipated "Star Trek." Now the project delightfully gets a new one in the lineup: Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy aka Bones.

StarTrek.com, the official site of the sci-fi franchise, has confirmed that the New Zealander has been signed on to play the young version of the USS Enterprise chief surgeon/chief medical officer, known for his catch phrase of "He's dead, Jim." The role, featured in the original Star Trek series, and the first six Star Trek films, was originated by actor DeForest Kelley, a native of Atlanta, Georgia who passed away in June 1999 due to stomach cancer.

Urban, widely known for his performance as Eomer of Rohan in the last two installments of "Lords of the Rings" trilogy, most recently appeared in Viking movie "Pathfinder" which sadly did not fare well in the box office. The Wellington-born actor previously was considered for the part of Kainan in "Outlander" that finally went to "The Passion of the Christ" star James Caviezel.

Apart from its report on Urban, StarTrek.com has also brought confirmation that Chris Pine indeed is cast as Captain James T. Kirk for the flick. TrekMovie even claims that deal on the actor to play the role has been closed.

Stephen Colbert for president

So, after weeks of teasing, Stephen Colbert has finally thrown his hat in the presidential ring. (He announced his candidacy last night; see below.) Normally, we at EW would be opposed to this move — if he gets elected, what will happen to his show? That's too great a sacrifice for us to sanction, even if Colbert's leadership would benefit the American people. Fortunately, this is Colbert we're talking about; if the guy can debate himself, as he does occasionally on his show, then he can run the country and still find time to do The Colbert Report every night. Godspeed, Stephen.

Pakistani crowds welcome Benazir Bhutto

Karachi - Pakistan's former prime minister Benazir Bhutto has returned home from Dubai after eight years in exile. At least 250,000 people were in Karachi to welcome her, while 20,000 police were deployed to control the crowds.

She fled Pakistan following corruption allegations but an agreement with President Pervez Musharraf earlier this month cleared the way for her return.

Ms Bhutto is immensely popular with much of the population. Her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founded the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and was executed in 1979, ensuring him the status of martyr.

After repeated denials, actor Saif Ali Khan confirmed on Wednesday that he and Kareena Kapoor are indeed ‘together’.
“Yes, we are not exactly shouting from the rooftops but yes, clearly we are together. And we are happy together,” Saif said.

New Technology Sheds Light On Centuries-Old Debate About Mona Lisa

Unprecedented details revealed about world’s most famous painting, including verifiable presence of eyebrows; Exhibit presents most accurate recreation of Mona Lisa’s original colors for the first time in the United States. SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17 / PRNewswire / – Since making its North American debut in San Francisco in August 2007, Da Vinci - an Exhibition of Genius has inspired thousands of visitors with the full scope of Leonardo da Vinci’s remarkable genius as an artist, inventor, anatomist, sculptor, engineer and architect. In line with the exhibition’s theme of discovery and invention, exhibition organizers RYP Australia today announced a new installation unveiling 25 secrets about the most famous painting in the world: Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” marking the first time these discoveries will be displayed in the United States.

“Mona Lisa Secrets Revealed” showcases the work of French engineer Pascal Cotte. His life-long passion for the study and preservation of the
Mona Lisa led him to invent the cutting edge 240-megapixel Multi-spectral Imaging Camera, which uses patented infrared technology and intense illumination to scan the painting and virtually peel away layers of varnish applied over centuries. With his camera, Cotte was able to uncover how the Mona Lisa looked as she was originally painted, including layers of over-painting, restoration and attempts at preservation — even identifying the individual pigments that da Vinci used. The exhibition features what is the most accurate representation ever of the Mona Lisa in its original color, presented side-by-side with a replica of what she looks like today, as well as a selection of high-definition, magnified studies.

Mona Lisa Revelations through technological innovation Cotte used his camera to scientifically verify and visually recreate 25 secrets of the Mona Lisa that otherwise go unseen — including for the first time ever revealed, the verifiable presence of eyebrows. Other discoveries include da Vinci’s preparatory drawings, alterations, restorations, and historical events the painting has withstood. Using his Multi-spectral Imaging Camera, Cotte’s work resulted in thirteen original photos of the masterpiece, with unequalled accuracy and resolution, showing how the Mona Lisa looked to Da Vinci’s contemporaries: blue sky, pink face, brighter mountains, and green trees. After two years of analysis, Cotte was further able to reveal layers of paint and undercoats covering the wooden panel on which it was painted.

The exhibition now allows the public to see amazing new details, including Mona Lisa’s original gaze and smile, new findings regarding the
mark on the corner of her eye, and the lace on her dress that has disappeared over time. Other revelations include:

Roberto Carlos: Favori Fenerbahçe

Fenerbahçe yarın Beşiktaş ile yapacağı derbi karşılaşmasının hazırlıklarını tamamladı.
Samandıra Tesisleri'nde, teknik direktör Zico yönetiminde akşam basına kapalı çalışan sarı-lacivertlilerin antrenmanı 2 saat sürdü. Koşuyla başlayan antrenmanda daha sonra 3 gruba ayrılarak, 5'e 2 pas çalışması yapan futbolcular, taktik ağırlıklı çift kale maçla antrenmanı tamamladı.

Çift kale maç sırasında ayağına bir darbe alan Semih, hafif bir sakatlık geçirdi, ancak antrenmanı tamamladı.

Ameliyat olan Kezman ve tedavisi süren Gürhan dışında tüm oyuncular antrenmanda yer aldı. Kaleci Serdar, antrenman boyunca saha kenarında yüksek tempolu yürüyüş yaptı.

Sarı-lacivertlilerin antrenmanını, kulüp başkanı Aziz Yıldırım ile yöneticiler Mahmut Uslu, Murat Özaydınlı, Neşet Yalçın ve Ali Yıldırım da izledi.

Fenerbahçeli futbolcular, antrenmanın ardından tesislerde kampa girdi.

BAŞKANIN DOĞUM GÜNÜNÜ KUTLADILAR

Fenerbahçe Kulübü Başkanı Aziz Yıldırım'ın doğum günü olduğunu öğrenen sarı-lacivertli futbolcular, çalışmayı izleyen Yıldırım'ın yanına gelerek, tek tek doğum gününü kutladılar.

Başkan Yıldırım da futbolculara, kendilerine güvendiğini ve derbi maçı kazanacaklarına inandığını söyledi.

LUGANO'YA BREZİLYA USULÜ DOĞUM GÜNÜ KUTLAMASI

Fenerbahçeli futbolcular, akşam antrenmanının ardından, Uruguaylı futbolcu Lugano'nun 27. doğum gününü, Brezilya usulü, un ve yumurta ile kutladı.

Antrenman sonrasında Tümer, daha önceden saha kenarına getirilen un ve yumurtalarla Lugano'ya saldırarak kutlamayı başlattı. Direnen Lugano, sahada tam bir yumurta ve un savaşı başlatırken, tüm oyuncular ve tesis görevlileri de un ve yumurtadan nasibini aldı.
Lugano, kutlamanın ardından yaptığı açıklamada, takım arkadaşlarıyla birlikte doğum gününü kutladığı için çok mutlu olduğunu söyledi.
Uruguaylı oyuncu, yarın Beşiktaş karşısında alacakları bir galibiyetin, kendisi için en büyük doğum günü armağanı olacağını kaydederken, “Başkanımızla doğum günlerimizin aynı olması büyük tesadüf. Derbiyi mutlaka kazanmalıyız. Lig bizim için çok önemli. Burada herkes bunun bilincinde. En büyük kozumuz ise taraftarımız, çünkü Fenerbahçe taraftarı, derbiyi kalplerinde hissederek davranıyor” dedi.

ROBERTO CARLOS: “FAVORİ FENERBAHÇE”

Fenerbahçe'nin yıldız oyuncusu Roberto Carlos, yarınki rakipleri Beşiktaş'ı tanıdığını, maçın favorisinin de kendileri olduğunu söyledi.
Antrenman sonrası FBTV'ye açıklamada bulunan Brezilyalı futbolcu, şunları kaydetti:

“Derbiler her yerde önemlidir. Beşiktaş'ı zaten tanıyorum. Süper Kupa finalinde karşı karşıya gelmiştik. Hem oyuncularını, hem de takımı tanıyorum. Yarınki maçta favori Fenerbahçe'dir. Tüm oyuncularımız, kazanmamız gerektiğinin farkında. Ligde de artık etkili hale gelmek istiyoruz.”
